A chartered aircraft flying from Mumbai to Baramati met with a serious accident while attempting to land near Baramati Airport on Wednesday morning. As per initial information shared by aviation authorities, five people who were onboard the aircraft are feared dead.
The aircraft reportedly lost control during the landing approach and crashed close to the runway area, following which it caught fire. Thick smoke was seen rising from the crash site, prompting immediate emergency response from local authorities.
Among those onboard was Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, along with two pilots and two accompanying staff members. Official confirmation regarding the identities of the victims is awaited, while authorities stated that there were no immediate reports of survivors.
Eyewitnesses in nearby areas said they heard a loud noise moments before the aircraft went down. Fire tenders, police teams, and medical personnel rushed to the spot and secured the area. Due to the fire and damage to the aircraft, rescue operations faced significant challenges.
Senior state officials were informed about the incident soon after the crash. The accident has sent shockwaves across political and administrative circles in Maharashtra, with leaders expressing deep concern and grief over the incident.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Officials said technical aspects, flight data, and landing conditions will be examined as part of the inquiry. At present, the exact reason behind the accident remains unclear.
